Biblical Boy Names That Start With N
When it comes to biblical boy names that start with the letter N, Noah reigns supreme on the popularity charts. But there are also plenty of other nice names that start with N and trace their roots to the Bible. From Noah and Nathan to Nehemiah and Nazareth, here's our selection of biblical boy names that start with N.
- Noah. A 21st-century favorite rooted in the Bible.
- Nathan. A popular prophet name from the Old Testament.
- Nicholas. The modern English version of the biblical/saintly Nicolas.
- Nathaniel. The modern version of the old scriptural appellation Nathanael.
- Nicolas. In the Bible, this name belongs to a leader of the early Christian church in Jerusalem. Outside the Bible, there's St. Nicolas of Myra, an early Christian bishop who loved to give presents and who ultimately gave rise to Santa Claus.
- Nehemiah. The central figure of the Book of Nehemiah, the biblical Nehemiah helped rebuild Jerusalem after the Babylonian captivity.
- Nathanael. A disciple of Jesus figuring in the Gospel of John, Nathanael is not mentioned by name in the other Gospels, but many Bible scholars maintain that Nathanael is the same as the apostle Bartholomew.
- Nahum. A nod to the author of the Book of Nahum.
- Nazareth. A big mantle for a small child, made more wearable by the nickname Naz.
- Nicodemus. Perhaps a bit too exotic for the typical American palate, the name Nicodemus is borne in the Bible by a Christian convert who, together with Joseph of Arimathea, took down and embalmed the body of Jesus after his crucifixion.
- Nain. This boy's name makes a brief appearance in the Bible as a place name: in Luke 7, Jesus raises the son of a widow from the dead near the gate of a Galilean town called Nain.
- Naaman. Known as an Old Testament military leader who was healed of his leprosy by Elisha the Prophet.
- Neziah. In the Bible, Neziah refers to an ancestor of temple workers who returned from the Babylonian exile. As a baby name, Neziah has yet to hit the big time.
- Neri. Looking for a scriptural name that means "light"? Try Neri, a short unisex name that has its roots in the Hebrew word ner, meaning "candle" (or basically any source of light). As for its biblical connection, Neri appears in Luke's account of the genealogy of Jesus.
- Nahshon. Borne in the Bible by the brother-in-law of Aaron and an ancestor of David and of Jesus Christ, this consonant-heavy choice doesn't lack biblical gravitas. Naasson is a spelling variation.
- Nekoda. A Japanese surname, but also an intriguing baby name possibility with a subtle biblical link: in the Old Testament, Nekoda is the name of a family of temple servants.
- Nicanor. In the Bible, Nicanor is one of the leaders of the early Christian church (aka the Seven Deacons).
- Naphtali. In the Bible, Naphtali is the sixth son of Jacob and one of the founders of the Twelve Tribes of Israel.
- Nethaniah. Virtually unheard of in the contemporary U.S., the name Nethaniah is borne by several minor characters in the Old Testament.
- Nicolaus. The Latin, German and Greek version of Nicolas/Nicholas.
- Nisan. This name is probably way too similar to the Japanese car brand to ever become a well-established baby name in the U.S., but it does have a lovely biblical meaning in the Old Testament: Nisan is the first month of spring on the Hebrew calendar.
